Trinamool Congress leader Shahjahan Sheikh, a key figure in Sandeshkhali, who had been evading authorities for 55 days, was apprehend by West Bengal Police on Thursday.
Sheikh and his associates, primary suspects in land grab and sexual harassment cases arising from tumultuous protests in Sandeshkhali island, North 24 Parganas district, have been on the run. Sheikh went into hiding on January 5, following an attack on ED officials by a mob of his supporters near his Sandeshkhali residence.

West Bengal Police, addressing legal challenges, emphasized the imperative arrest of Shahjahan Sheikh. ADG (South Bengal) Supratim Sarkar stated that the arrest proceeded after the court lifted a stay order. Sheikh was apprehended in the Minakhan police station area, facing charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 147 (rioting) and 148 (armed rioting).

In a press briefing, a senior police official urged Opposition party leaders to refrain from sowing divisions in the Sandeshkhali area. Expressing distress over accusations against the police, particularly from the Opposition, the official stated, ‘It is better not to engage in such actions.’

Gokhale Applauds Quick Arrest of Sheikh Shahjahan, Contrasts with BJP’s Brij Bhushan Sharan
In response to the news, TMC’s National General Secretary Saket Gokhale took to social media, stating, ‘As our Natl Gen Sec @abhishekaitc had rightly pointed out — it was a Calcutta HC stay order that had restrained the police.’ Gokhale highlighted the party’s commitment to Sheikh Shahjahan’s arrest ‘WITHIN DAYS’ if the HC allowed. Following the HC’s clarification on February 26, permitting WB Police to arrest Sheikh Shahjahan, the arrest was swiftly executed in less than 72 hours.

In a notable remark, TMC’s Saket Gokhale underscored the contrast, stating, ‘Despite nationwide protests, the Modi Govt NEVER arrested Brij Bhushan Sharan. Remarkably, he remains a Lok Sabha MP of the BJP despite his criminal record. That’s the distinction between Mamata Banerjee’s approach and Narendra Modi’s alleged criminal protection.’
