Amit Shah Will Discuss Police Action Against Student Protesters, But Opposition Must Avoid Disruptions: Kiren Rijiju

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said on Monday that the government is ready to hold a detailed discussion on student and youth protests across the country. He said Union Home Minister Amit Shah will respond to the debate on behalf of the government. The discussion will also cover the police action taken against protesters during the July 20 Parliament march in Delhi. Rijiju said the government has already conveyed its willingness to discuss the issue in the Business Advisory Committee meeting.

Rijiju Urges Opposition to Maintain Order During Amit Shah’s Statement

Rijiju urged opposition MPs to maintain order when Amit Shah addresses the House. He asked them to listen to the Home Minister’s statement peacefully instead of creating disruptions. He said the government wants a detailed discussion where all aspects of the protests and police action can be examined. According to Rijiju, opposition members should allow the Home Minister to complete his response. He also called for a constructive debate once the discussion begins.

The government’s decision comes amid continued disruption in Parliament during the Monsoon Session. Opposition parties have been demanding Amit Shah’s statement on the police action against student protesters. They have also questioned his absence from the Lok Sabha during the session, which began on July 20 and is scheduled to conclude on August 13. Rijiju also claimed that differences have emerged between the Congress and Samajwadi Party over the issue. He asked both parties to resolve their differences and cooperate on the student protest matter.

Student Protest Over Police Action Triggers Parliament Deadlock

The Monsoon Session has witnessed repeated adjournments, with Parliament conducting limited business. The Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, became one of the key pieces of legislation to pass through both Houses. Parliament also passed three other bills with limited debate, while the Lok Sabha cleared two additional bills. Rijiju earlier met Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi in an effort to resolve the political deadlock. He said political parties may be opponents but should not consider each other enemies.

The dispute began after Delhi Police used lathis and tear gas during a student protest march toward Parliament on July 20. Protesters alleged that security personnel also used pellet guns during the confrontation, while the CRPF confirmed the incident involving its personnel. Opposition parties have since demanded an explanation from Home Minister Amit Shah over the police action. They have also sought discussions on other issues, including alleged theft of donations at the Ayodhya Ram temple. The government has now agreed to discuss the student protests and police action in Parliament.
