During a mediation session for a separated couple, a sessions judge questioned the wife for not wearing a “bindi” or “mangalsutra,” asking why her husband would be interested in her.
Pune-based disputes lawyer Ankur R Jahagirdar shared the incident in a LinkedIn post, stating that the couple was attending mediation for a domestic violence case. The judge encouraged them to resolve their issues amicably. Addressing the woman, the judge remarked, “I see you are not wearing a mangalsutra or bindi. If you don’t present yourself as a married woman, why would your husband take interest in you?”

Mr. Jahagirdar expressed disappointment over the lack of a system to address inappropriate remarks made by judges. He stated that district courts witness many incidents that would shock any rational, educated individual. “Sadly, our society seems to have a baseline tolerance for certain outrageous things,” he wrote.

Sharing another mediation experience, Mr. Jahagirdar recounted a sessions judge advising his client to be more flexible. According to him, the judge stated, “A woman with a good income always seeks a husband earning more than her and won’t settle for less. But a wealthy man might even marry a maid working in his house. See how flexible men are? You should also be more adaptable and not so rigid.”
