Mukul Roy, Former Railway Minister and TMC Leader, Dies at 71

Former Union Railway Minister and senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mukul Roy passed away at a private hospital in Kolkata early Monday. He was 71.

According to Mukul Roy’s son, Subhranshu Roy, the veteran leader had been in a coma for several days and died of cardiac arrest at around 1:30 am.A founding member of the All India Trinamool Congress in 1998, Roy later left Mamata Banerjee and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2017.In 2021, he won the West Bengal Assembly election from Krishnanagar Uttar on a BJP ticket but rejoined the TMC soon after the polls.

Veteran TMC Leader Mukul Roy dies Cardiac Arrest

Roy served as Union Railway Minister in 2011 under UPA-2, when TMC was part of the ruling coalition government. He also represented West Bengal twice in the Rajya Sabha.

BJP leader Dilip Ghosh described Roy as a seasoned politician who earned considerable respect during his stint with the party. He said Roy was with the BJP from 2019 to 2021, later rejoined TMC, and remained unwell in recent years.

Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari condoled Roy’s death, expressing sympathy for his family and praying for eternal peace on X.
