PM Modi arrived in Bishkek before the SCO summit, seeking bilateral talks with several leaders. India has confirmed Modi will meet Vladimir Putin during Monday’s SCO summit in Kyrgyzstan today. Officials have not confirmed whether Modi will hold a bilateral meeting with Xi Jinping yet.
However, reports suggest Modi and Xi may meet for the second time within one year. Modi’s meeting with Putin carries major importance as both countries seek stronger strategic cooperation globally. India and Russia aim to expand defence, trade, and energy cooperation amid global uncertainty today. Their partnership faces pressure as US President Donald Trump reshapes Washington’s approach toward both countries. Modi could use talks with Putin to strengthen energy supplies and defence cooperation further today. If Modi meets Xi, both leaders could discuss border issues along the disputed Line today. Such talks could help India and China rebuild trust after years of border tensions slowly.
India Strengthens Ties With Russia, China and Central Asia at SCO Summit
The leaders could also address ongoing conflicts involving Iran and Ukraine during their discussions today. India recently sent External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to Russia for important bilateral diplomatic discussions. National Security Adviser Ajit Doval also visited China to explore ways toward improved bilateral ties.
These visits showed India’s efforts to strengthen relationships with both Moscow and Beijing simultaneously together. Modi reached Kyrgyzstan after completing a two-day visit to Uzbekistan on Sunday after talks there. During that visit, India and Uzbekistan elevated their relationship to a comprehensive bilateral strategic partnership. They also set a target of five billion dollars in annual bilateral trade by 2030. Upon arrival, Kyrgyz officials welcomed Modi with traditional dances and a ceremonial reception at airport. Indian community members later welcomed Modi warmly at his hotel with chants of Vande Mataram. The SCO now marks twenty-five years while bringing together ten member countries for regional cooperation.
