West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will appear before the Supreme Court today to argue her petition challenging the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in the State. A Bench headed by Justice Surya Kant will hear the matter. Banerjee filed a writ petition against the Election Commission of India on January 28, questioning the ongoing SIR exercise. She alleged that the process could lead to large-scale disenfranchisement of voters. According to the petition, the revision exercise suffers from opacity, haste, and unconstitutional conduct.
The Chief Minister also raised concerns about the “Logical Discrepancy” category used during the revision. She alleged that election authorities classified voters under this category without clearly defined criteria. Moreover, she said officials failed to upload the LD list online, despite earlier judicial directions, thereby denying affected voters the chance to verify or correct their status.

Mamata challenges Election Commission’s SIR process before CJI-led Bench
The Chief Minister has also flagged serious irregularities in the classification of voters under the “Logical Discrepancy” category. Mamata claimed authorities failed to upload the list of such individuals online, despite earlier court directions. As a result, affected voters lost transparency and a fair opportunity to respond. Citing a lack of confidence in the SIR process, Banerjee urged the Supreme Court to direct authorities to conduct elections using the electoral rolls prepared last year.
Banerjee further contended that the absence of transparency violates constitutional guarantees of equality and the right to vote. She warned that the SIR process, if allowed to continue, could undermine the credibility of the electoral process in West Bengal. On this basis, she urged the Court to direct the Election Commission to rely on the electoral rolls prepared last year. The case also raises broader questions about the balance between administrative efficiency and voter rights. Legal observers note that the Supreme Court’s ruling could set an important precedent for how future voter roll revisions are conducted across states
