West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) while addressing the ongoing rebellion within her party. She declared that she would continue fighting for the people and remain politically active despite mounting challenges. Banerjee rejected criticism over her age and urged her political opponents to stop age-shaming. She reaffirmed her commitment to party workers and the public, saying the TMC continues to enjoy strong grassroots support. She also claimed that many new members are joining the party despite recent political setbacks. Her remarks came as the TMC confronted one of its biggest organisational crises since its formation in 1998, with rival factions operating under separate leadership.

Abhishek Banerjee receives strong backing amid political crisis
Meanwhile, Banerjee expressed confidence that the Trinamool Congress would overcome the current political turmoil. She recalled rebuilding the party in 2006 and said she could achieve the same success again in 2026. She acknowledged that the TMC currently has 18 Members of Parliament and claimed that political opponents have threatened several party leaders and their families. However, she made it clear that anyone unwilling to remain with the party could leave. Banerjee insisted that dedicated workers remain the party’s greatest strength and said the organisation would continue expanding despite resignations and internal dissent following the Assembly election defeat.
Banerjee also defended TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee against criticism from rebel leaders. She praised his commitment and said he never abandoned the political battle despite facing continuous pressure. She claimed that investigating agencies summoned members of his family but asserted that he refused to seek political relief or compromise. Banerjee apologised to the people of West Bengal on behalf of leaders she described as traitors. She also stated that neither she nor any member of her family had ever compromised their political principles for personal survival.
Mamata Banerjee expresses confidence despite TMC rebellion
The political crisis within the Trinamool Congress deepened after senior MLA Madan Mitra joined the rebel faction led by Leader of the Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee. Mitra accused Abhishek Banerjee of exercising excessive influence within the party and blamed his leadership style for growing dissatisfaction. He revealed that he had asked Abhishek Banerjee to step aside from organisational responsibilities for six months to restore unity, but the party leadership rejected his proposal. After that decision, Mitra left the party camp, adding to the list of senior leaders who have questioned the TMC leadership in recent weeks.
Political observers believe the latest developments have intensified the struggle for control within the Trinamool Congress ahead of future elections. Although Mamata Banerjee remains confident about rebuilding the party, the continuing resignations and rebellion have created significant organisational challenges. At the same time, the BJP has intensified its attacks on the ruling party by highlighting its internal divisions. As rival factions compete for influence and senior leaders continue changing sides, West Bengal’s political environment is likely to remain highly competitive and politically charged in the coming months.
