NEW DELHI: The Central government is preparing to move ahead with the proposal to officially rename Kerala as “Keralam.” The Union Cabinet is expected to review and approve the recommendation soon. Once the Cabinet clears the proposal, the decision will mark an important administrative and symbolic shift for the southern state.
Officials say the proposal has gained momentum at multiple levels. Earlier, the state government passed a resolution requesting the name change. It argued that “Keralam” better represents the pronunciation and cultural identity of the Malayalam language. Now, the Centre is examining the constitutional and procedural requirements needed to formalise the change.
If the Union Cabinet approves the move, the government will place the proposal before Parliament. Lawmakers must pass a constitutional amendment to change a state’s name. Both Houses of Parliament will need to approve the amendment. After that, the President will grant assent to complete the process and make the change official.

Supporters of the move believe the new name will better represent the state’s linguistic heritage and historical roots. They argue that several Indian cities and states have previously restored traditional names to preserve cultural identity. Critics, however, question whether the change should be prioritized amid broader governance and economic concerns.
Union Cabinet Set to Initiate Official Renaming Process
Officials have clarified that the renaming will not alter administrative boundaries or governance structures. The government will treat the move as a formal recognition of the state’s preferred native identity. If authorities approve the proposal, they will gradually update government records, official documents, and central notifications with the new name.
Earlier, the state assembly passed a resolution seeking the official name change. Lawmakers introduced the move to align the state’s name with its cultural and linguistic identity. After passing the resolution, the state government sent the proposal to the Centre for consideration. If the Centre approves it, Parliament will need to grant clearance before authorities can make the change official.
