Kerala Achieves Milestone as First Indian State to End Extreme Poverty

Kerala has achieved a historic milestone by becoming India’s first state to eradicate extreme poverty. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced the achievement in the Assembly on Kerala Piravi, the state’s formation day. He said this success marked a proud moment in Kerala’s journey towards a new, inclusive society. Vijayan recalled that eradicating poverty was a key decision made at the first cabinet meeting in 2021. The Chief Minister noted that the achievement fulfilled a major election promise made to the people. He said the initiative symbolised the government’s commitment to building a socially just and economically secure Kerala.

Kerala Becomes India’s First State to Eradicate Extreme Poverty

The Extreme Poverty Eradication Programme (EPEP) was launched to uplift the state’s most vulnerable families. Officials identified 64,006 poor households and designed micro-level plans to address each family’s specific needs. The government invested over ₹1,000 crore to provide food, housing, healthcare, and basic documentation support. Around 20,000 families received daily meals, while 85,000 individuals gained access to essential medical treatment. Thousands of houses were built, repaired, or sanctioned to provide safe shelter for deserving families. The programme focused on compassion-driven governance and community participation to ensure meaningful and lasting impact.

The scheme ensured regular meals for thousands of underprivileged families across all districts in Kerala.
Over 5,400 houses were newly constructed, and nearly 5,500 were repaired for improved living standards.
Around 2,700 landless families received plots to build their own homes with dignity and stability. More than 4,000 families were supported through livelihood projects to promote self-sufficiency and employment generation. Officials also provided essential identity documents, pensions, and benefits to previously excluded individuals. The government said Kerala’s model combined technology, social inclusion, and targeted planning to deliver measurable outcomes.

Political Reactions and Broader Impact

The announcement triggered a sharp reaction from the opposition in the Legislative Assembly. Leader of Opposition VD Satheesan called the statement “pure fraud” and accused the government of misleading people. He claimed the declaration violated House rules and distorted the reality of poverty in the state.
In protest, the Congress-led UDF members walked out of the session, shouting slogans against the government. Vijayan rejected the allegations, saying his government only announced what it had genuinely accomplished. He said the opposition’s accusations reflected its frustration at the government’s transparent and results-based governance model.

Local Self-Government Minister MB Rajesh praised the coordinated efforts behind the state’s poverty eradication success. He said the programme involved local bodies under both LDF and UDF administrations, ensuring political inclusivity. Rajesh stressed that Kerala’s achievement resulted from long-term planning and consistent implementation across all regions. He said the initiative demonstrated how cooperation between governments and citizens could transform social realities. The minister added that Kerala’s success could inspire other states to adopt similar targeted strategies. He concluded that the state would now focus on reducing relative poverty and strengthening welfare measures.
