Jammu and Kashmir Police sources stated that they received information about the presence of four to five militants in a Kulgam village.

At least five militants died and two Indian Army soldiers sustained wounds in a gunbattle at an orchard in Kulgam, South Kashmir, on Thursday.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police stated that although they located the bodies of the five militants, they have not yet recovered them, and they will confirm their identities later.

Officials said a joint team of J-K Police and the Army cordoned off Kadder village in South Kashmir’s Kulgam following intelligence reports about militants’ presence in the area.

The police said that as they were closing in on the target, the militants emerged from a house, opened fire indiscriminately at the forces, and attempted to breach the security cordon.

In response, the joint security team retaliated, resulting in a gunfight.

Police sources said they received information about the presence of four to five militants in the village. They added that although they have not recovered the militants’ bodies yet, they are likely to be locals.

This is the second major gunbattle in Kulgam this year. On July 8, six militants and two soldiers lost their lives in two separate encounters in the district.
