A tragic helicopter crash in the US state of Georgia claimed the life of a 25-year-old Indian-origin pilot just hours after his wedding ceremony. Dave Fiji, an Atlanta resident and a pilot with Delta Air Lines, died when a Robinson R66 helicopter crashed near Dawsonville in Dawson County on Friday night. His newlywed wife, Jessni, survived the accident with injuries and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital. The helicopter pilot also lost his life in the crash. The incident turned what had been a joyful wedding celebration into a devastating tragedy for both families.
Dave Fiji and Jessni had married earlier that day at The Revere, a wedding and events venue near Dawsonville. Family members said hundreds of guests attended the ceremony. Following the reception, the couple planned to travel by helicopter to Peachtree-DeKalb Airport before spending the night at a hotel in downtown Atlanta. However, weather conditions reportedly worsened as the evening progressed. Fog and rain reduced visibility across the area. According to Dave’s father, George Fiji, his son had expressed concern about flying in such conditions. As an experienced commercial pilot, Dave reportedly told family members that he would not normally choose to fly with visibility so poor.
Despite those concerns, the helicopter eventually departed after the pilot reportedly decided to continue the journey at a higher altitude. Sometime later, the aircraft crashed in a rugged and heavily wooded area southwest of Dawsonville. Emergency responders faced major challenges reaching the wreckage because of the difficult terrain and dense vegetation. Local residents said rescue teams needed off-road vehicles and special equipment to access the crash site. Authorities later confirmed that the operation took several hours.

George Fiji revealed that Jessni remained trapped under debris and fallen trees for nearly five hours before rescuers reached her. When she regained consciousness, she found herself pinned beneath the wreckage. According to her father-in-law, she discovered Dave lying across her chest and quickly realised he had not survived. Jessni, who works as a nurse, suffered cuts and bruises but escaped with no broken bones. However, family members said she remains emotionally devastated by the loss of her husband.
Dave’s parents, George and Pheba Fiji, originally emigrated from Muvattupuzha in Kerala’s Ernakulam district to the United States. Jessni’s family also traces its roots to Kerala, specifically Alappuzha district. Speaking to local media, George described his son as a precious gift and said the wedding had been perfect until the tragedy occurred. He recalled how excited everyone had been before the accident changed everything within hours.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that the helicopter crashed around 10:30 pm with three people on board. Andy Whitaker, director of operations for Prestige Helicopters, said the company had maintained a strong safety record for four decades. He described the accident as unprecedented for the operator. Meanwhile, the National Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation into the crash. Officials expect to release a preliminary report within 30 days.
