India welcomed a sense of relief after US President Donald Trump cut reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods from 50% to 18%, ending months of strain on Asia’s third-largest economy and providing a boost to bilateral trade. However, the absence of clear details has kept uncertainty alive. Trump raised tariffs sharply last August, accusing India of funding Russia’s war in Ukraine by purchasing discounted Russian oil. The move hit Indian exports and trade hard, especially in job-heavy sectors like textiles, seafood and jewellery.
Trade Boost as India US Tariff Cut Eases Market Pressure
Trade between India and the US received a boost as India has not confirmed these claims. Modi thanked Trump for the announcement and said he hoped to take India–US ties to “unprecedented heights,” without addressing oil or agriculture commitments directly. The tariff cut has boosted market confidence, easing pressure on the rupee, equities and interest rates. Industry leaders and exporters welcomed the decision, saying it improves India’s competitiveness and strengthens its position as an alternative manufacturing hub to China. The new 18% tariff now aligns India with regional peers like Vietnam, Thailand and Bangladesh.

At the same time, experts urged caution. Trade analysts noted that Trump’s statement leaves key questions unanswered, including which products the deal covers, when changes will take effect, and whether India has agreed to reduce tariffs or non-tariff barriers in sensitive areas such as agriculture. Agricultural access remains especially controversial, as half of India’s population depends on farming. While US officials said the deal would expand American farm exports to India, Delhi has avoided public comment on the issue.
Analysts also questioned Trump’s claim that India would buy more than $500bn worth of American goods, pointing out that India’s current annual imports from the US remain below $50bn. Despite the uncertainty, observers see the announcement as a positive step. Both governments signalled that further negotiations will follow in the coming months.
