Bullet Train to Moon Mission: Key Projects Strengthening India-Japan Ties

New Delhi: Japan Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is set to visit India shortly, where she will hold high-level talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The visit is expected to strengthen bilateral cooperation across defence, technology, infrastructure, clean energy and space exploration. India and Japan have steadily expanded their partnership over the years. In 2014, both countries bullet elevated their relationship to a “Special Strategic and Global Partnership.” Since then, they have launched several flagship projects that continue to deepen economic and strategic cooperation. From India’s first bullet train to a joint lunar mission, the partnership now spans multiple sectors that shape the future of both nations.

Japan backs freight corridors, metro projects and clean energy initiatives in India

One of the most significant examples of this cooperation is the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project. Japan is financing the country’s first bullet train corridor while providing its world-famous Shinkansen technology. The 508-kilometre rail line aims to transform high-speed transportation in India. Japan has also played a crucial role in developing the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor through financial assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The agency funded nearly 80 percent of the project’s cost through Official Development Assistance loans. The 1,506-kilometre freight corridor supports the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor and strengthens India’s logistics network.

Japan has emerged as a major partner in India’s urban infrastructure development. It has provided financial and technical support for metro rail projects in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata and Ahmedabad. At the same time, both countries are expanding cooperation in clean energy. Under the India-Japan Clean Energy Partnership, they are working to establish a hydrogen-ammonia trade corridor and large renewable ammonia plants in Odisha. The partnership also promotes carbon reduction through the Joint Crediting Mechanism. These initiatives support India’s clean energy transition while creating new opportunities for sustainable industrial growth.

Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train remains the flagship symbol of bilateral cooperation

Technology and manufacturing have become another strong pillar of India-Japan relations. Companies such as NEC and Reliance Jio are working together to develop 5G and Open RAN infrastructure under the India-Japan Digital Partnership. Both countries are also strengthening semiconductor and advanced manufacturing capabilities. Japanese company Proterial, formerly known as Hitachi Metals, has invested around ₹2,250 crore to establish a permanent magnet manufacturing facility in India. The two nations are also collaborating on semiconductor projects, including the OSAT facility in Sanand, Gujarat. These investments aim to build resilient supply chains and reduce dependence on global manufacturing hubs.

The partnership extends beyond industry into regional development and space exploration. Through the Act East Forum, Japan supports connectivity, hydropower, forest management and water supply projects across Northeast India. These projects improve links between India and Southeast Asia while promoting regional development. Space cooperation has also reached new heights through the Lunar Polar Exploration (LUPEX) Mission. ISRO and JAXA are jointly developing the mission to explore the Moon’s polar region under the Chandrayaan-5 programme. Japan has also contributed to cultural infrastructure by funding the Rudraksh Convention Centre in Varanasi. Together, these projects demonstrate the expanding scope of India-Japan strategic cooperation and highlight their shared vision for long-term regional and global development.
