Actor Imran Khan Asked to Leave India Days After Taking Part in CJP Protest

New Delhi: Mumbai Police have reportedly asked actor Imran Khan to leave India following his participation in a recent protest. The notice reportedly gives the actor an October 28 deadline to leave the country.

Police cited immigration rules concerning his participation in the demonstration despite his non-Indian citizenship. Imran Khan, nephew of Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, is believed to hold United States citizenship. He reportedly possesses an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card instead of full Indian citizenship. However, OCI status does not confer Indian citizenship or unrestricted political rights. The actor attended a protest at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan on October 10.

Imran Khan Detained During CJP Protest, Shares Police Van Photo on Social Media

Protesters gathered to demonstrate against Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Khan participated alongside his partner, actor Lekha Washington, and his cousin, Zayne Marie Khan. Police detained all three during the demonstration and released them later. Khan subsequently shared a photograph of himself inside a police van on social media. He captioned the image, “Apparently I’m going for a drive.” The post attracted attention following his detention during the protest.

A video circulating online also captured Khan saying “Jai Hind” to police personnel. In another clip, he expressed confusion about his detention and questioned why officers had taken him away. He said police had picked up several people from the streets and instructed them to sit inside vans. Khan further claimed that officers drove the detainees around for approximately two hours before releasing them. Authorities reportedly detained around 400 people during the CJP protest.

Those detained included members of the Tushar Gandhi-led organisation Hum Bharat Ke Log. Activists affiliated with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) also faced detention during the police operation. The reported notice has drawn attention to the immigration status of foreign citizens participating in political demonstrations in India. The circumstances surrounding the notice and its legal basis remain important considerations in understanding the case.
