ICC’s Call on Perth Pitch Ends Test in Two Days Shortest Ashes Clash Since 1888

The ICC has rated the Perth Stadium pitch used for the fast-paced Ashes Test as “very good,” despite the match ending in under two days, making it the shortest Ashes Test since 1888 and one of the quickest ever played in Australia. Match referee Ranjan Madugalle praised the pitch for its strong carry, reliable bounce, and minimal early seam movement, stating in his report that it provided a balanced contest according to the ICC’s four-tier grading system. The lively surface saw 19 wickets fall on the opening day, setting the stage for a fast bowling-dominated match.

The Test lasted only 847 deliveries, with both teams tearing through the batting line-ups before Australia clinched a seven-wicket victory. Mitchell Starc took 7 for 58 to trigger England’s collapse on day one, but Ben Stokes responded with five wickets, leaving Australia struggling at 123 for 9 by stumps. England looked to have gained control early on day two, extending their lead to over 100, but Scott Boland dismantled their middle order, setting Australia a target of 205. In the defining moment of the match, Travis Head blasted 123 off 83 balls after being promoted to open, leading Australia to victory in just 29 overs.

Australian captain Steven Smith noted that the pitch started to settle by the evening session of day two, similar to conditions at Perth last season, where wickets fell early before the surface became more conducive to batting. Cricket Australia supported the ICC’s verdict, with cricket chief James Allsopp stating that the rating confirmed their belief in the pitch’s balance. He acknowledged the disappointment for fans who had purchased tickets for days three and four, estimating a revenue loss of AUD 3–4 million, but emphasized that the match’s fast-paced nature highlighted elite skill and excitement. The thrilling finish has raised anticipation for next week’s day-night Test at the Gabba, where curator Dave Sandurski believes the pitch will offer a fairer, more durable surface despite the hotter conditions.
