Ghaziabad Rename Proposal to be Discussed by Civic Body Today

Given the BJP’s substantial majority in the Ghaziabad-civic-body, it appears that there are minimal hurdles for the proposed name change.

Hindu organizations’ appeals are driving the potential inclusion of Ghaziabad, situated near Delhi, in Uttar-Pradesh’s expanding list of renamed places. The civic body is considering the names Gajnagar and Harnandi Nagar for the proposed renaming.

Yesterday, a BJP councillor proposed it, and The Times-of-India reported Ghaziabad civic body included it in Tuesday’s board meeting agenda. Given the BJP’s comfortable majority, obstacles for the name change seem minimal.

Mayor Sunita Dayal highlighted ongoing requests for renaming, emphasizing that this marks the first executive-level discussion on the matter.

Sanjay Singh, the proponent of the proposal, emphasized Ghaziabad’s historical significance within the National Capital Region, asserting its right to a distinct identity.

Mahant Narayan Giri, the leading priest of Dudheshwar Nath temple, spearheading the name-change efforts, noted Ghaziabad’s historical association with Hastinapur, the capital of the Kuru Kingdom in Hindu texts.

Uttar Pradesh has been at the forefront of renaming places, notably transforming Allahabad into Prayagraj since 2018. In 2020, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath proposed renaming the Ghagra river to Saryu. The trend continued in 2021, renaming Faizabad junction to Ayodhya Cantonment and Jhansi railway station to Veerangana Laxmibai Railway Station.

Recently, the Union Home Ministry approved changing the names of two places: Mundera Bazaar in Gorakhpur district to Chauri-Chaura and Telia Afghan village in Deoria district to Telia Shukla. The state has witnessed a series of such transformations in recent years.
