Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Ganga Expressway in Uttar Pradesh UP and marked a major infrastructure milestone. The 594-kilometre, six-lane expressway connects Meerut with Prayagraj and reduces travel time between the two cities to around six hours. Earlier, this journey took nearly 10 to 12 hours and made road travel much slower. The expressway improves connectivity across twelve districts, including Hapur, Shahjahanpur, Unnao, and Rae Bareli. It also strengthens access between the Delhi-NCR region and eastern Uttar Pradesh through smooth highway integration. Officials expect the project to boost regional mobility, reduce congestion on older highways, and support faster movement of people and goods across the state.

Major Infrastructure Push Linking Western and Eastern UP
The Ganga Expressway stands as one of Uttar Pradesh’s most expensive infrastructure projects, and the government built it at a cost of around ₹36,000 crore. Engineers designed it for high-speed travel of up to 120 kmph and included provisions for expansion up to eight lanes in the future. The government operates the project under a public-private partnership model, and major infrastructure companies manage it under a long concession period. Authorities will place two main toll plazas at Meerut and Prayagraj to manage revenue collection. The expressway also supports freight transport efficiently, as its length fits the ideal range for road logistics and improves trade movement across northern India.
The expressway includes major engineering structures, and builders constructed large river bridges over the Ganga and Ramganga rivers with flood-resistant design. It also connects 21 interchanges that link major national and state highways and improve regional access. Developers created nine service areas along the route with fuel stations, food courts, and rest facilities to support travelers. A major highlight includes a 3.5-km emergency landing strip in Shahjahanpur, and the Indian Air Force has already tested it for defense operations. Overall, the project strengthens connectivity, supports economic development, and positions Uttar Pradesh as a major expressway hub in India.
