As Rajasthan native Ashok Sharma arrived in Mohali on Tuesday morning, he was heartbroken to see the lifeless body of his only son, Mohit. Mohit (21), representing Rajasthan University, passed away on Monday evening after suffering a cardiac arrest during the second round of his bout against Anand from Annamalai University in the men’s 85 kg category at the All India Inter-University Wushu Championship held at Chandigarh University in Mohali.

A Rajasthan Father’s Sacrifice and a Shattered Dream

The family hails from Gorakhpura village in Rajgarh tehsil, Alwar. However, for the past six years, Ashok had been living away from them, running a small grocery shop in Jaipur to support his son’s sporting aspirations. Tragically, those dreams were shattered with Mohit’s untimely demise.

Mohit’s Passion for Martial Arts and a Father’s Unfulfilled Dreams

Mohit had a deep passion for Wushu and other martial arts, which led him to convince me to move to Jaipur so he could train at a local college. It was a difficult decision, but I opened a small grocery shop to support Mohit and our family, including my wife Sunita and daughters, Nisha and Ritika, who stayed back in our village.He practiced with us regularly at the stadium ground, and when I met him last week, he expressed his excitement about competing in the All India Inter-University meet at Chandigarh University But with his passing, we have lost everything, including our dreams of seeing him achieve greatness, said an emotional Ashok while speaking on his way back from Mohali to Rajasthan.

Mohit’s Journey from Kickboxing to Wushu

The 21-year-old initially pursued karate and kickboxing, even competing in an international kickboxing tournament in Thailand. Two years ago, Mohit transitioned to Wushu, training under local coaches at Chaugan Stadium in Jaipur. A student of Vivek PG College, Jaipur, he secured victory in the men’s 85 kg trials conducted by Rajasthan University for the All India Inter-University Wushu Championship. He had traveled to Mohali last week along with the Rajasthan University team for the competition.

A Dedicated Martial Artist Gone Too Soon

Mohit was deeply passionate about martial arts and rarely missed a training session. He practiced with us regularly at the stadium ground, and when I met him last week, he expressed his excitement about competing in the All India Inter-University meet at Chandigarh University. His friends and fellow trainees are in shock over this tragic news, shared Rajat Gupta, Mohit’s friend and fellow trainee from Jaipur.

The Final Bout and Tragic Collapse

A video recorded by the coaches for bout review shows Mohit winning the first round before his opponent dragged him out of the mat in the second round.. As the referee called both players back to the mat, Mohit returned and charged at his opponent when the bout resumed but suddenly collapsed. Coaches rushed him to the medical team at the venue and then transferred him to the university hospital. Later, they took him to Kharar Government Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
