Anand Mahindra shares rare 144-year-old photo of Kedarnath

Industrialist Anand Mahindra drew widespread attention during the Kedarnath Yatra after sharing a rare 144-year-old photograph of the sacred shrine. He posted the image, believed to have been taken in 1882, on social media and said it was among the earliest known photographs of Kedarnath Dham. The picture gave devotees and history enthusiasts a glimpse of how Kedarnath looked long before modern facilities reached the region. His post encouraged many people to reflect on the spiritual journeys of the past.

Anand Mahindra said reaching Kedarnath in those days was far from easy. He explained that there were no roads, no railway links, and no helicopter services available at the time. Pilgrims had to travel through difficult mountain paths and endure a long journey to reach the temple. He described Kedarnath as the sacred abode of Lord Shiva nestled in the Himalayas. According to him, the pilgrimage back then was not only about reaching the destination but also about faith, patience, and endurance.

He also said that modern facilities have now made it easier for a larger number of devotees to visit Kedarnath, which is a positive development. Better roads, helicopter services, and improved arrangements have simplified the journey for thousands of pilgrims. However, he also raised a thoughtful question about whether people are losing the deeper spiritual meaning of the journey in today’s fast-paced world. His remarks sparked discussions online about balancing convenience with devotion.

Heavy Rush Marks Start Of Kedarnath Yatra 2026

The Kedarnath Yatra 2026 has already begun and witnessed a heavy rush of pilgrims in the first few days. Reports stated that more than 1.1 lakh devotees visited the shrine within three days of the temple opening. Officials and religious leaders credited improved infrastructure and efficient planning by the Uttarakhand government for the smooth movement of pilgrims this season. The increasing number of visitors highlights the growing significance of the annual pilgrimage.

Located at an altitude of around 3,584 metres in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district, Kedarnath remains one of the holiest temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is counted among the twelve Jyotirlingas and holds immense spiritual importance for millions of devotees. Due to harsh weather conditions in the Himalayas, the temple opens only for a limited period each year. Pilgrims from across the country eagerly wait for the shrine to reopen every season.

Authorities have made registration mandatory for all pilgrims joining the Kedarnath Yatra this year. Devotees can register online through the official Uttarakhand Tourism portal or offline at centres in Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Sonprayag. Pilgrims can reach Kedarnath either by the traditional trekking route or through helicopter services operating from Phata, Guptkashi, and Sirsi. Officials have also advised visitors to carry warm clothes and stay alert to sudden weather changes in the region.
