Droupadi Murmu approved the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Act, 2026, and the government published it in the official Gazette on Tuesday. The new law formally declares Amaravati as the sole capital of the state. This decision brings clarity to the long-pending capital issue. The development marks a significant political and administrative milestone for Andhra Pradesh.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu welcomed the move and confirmed that Amaravati will serve as the state’s only capital. He shared the Gazette notification on social media and expressed his satisfaction. He thanked the central leadership for supporting the decision. He described the moment as a major achievement for the people of the state.

Centre clears amendment, ending uncertainty over Andhra capital
Naidu expressed gratitude to President Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for their support in approving the legislation. He also acknowledged the role of Members of Parliament and state leaders. He credited citizens, especially farmers of Amaravati, for their contribution. He called the development a long-awaited dream fulfilled.
The amendment updated the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, by clearly naming Amaravati as the capital. Earlier, the law had allowed Hyderabad to function as a joint capital for both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for up to ten years. After that period, Andhra Pradesh needed a new capital. The amendment resolves that requirement with a clear designation.
The Andhra Pradesh Assembly passed a resolution supporting Amaravati as the single capital before Parliament took up the Bill. Both Houses of Parliament approved the legislation in early April. However, members of the YSR Congress Party opposed the move and staged a walkout. Some leaders questioned the decision and raised concerns over its justification.
