Air India CEO Campbell Wilson Announces Resignation, Says ‘Timing Feels Right’

Air India has confirmed that CEO and MD Campbell Wilson will step down, stating that the timing is appropriate for a leadership transition as the airline prepares for its next phase of growth. The company revealed that Wilson had already informed Chairman N. Chandrasekaran in 2024 about his intention to exit in 2026. His departure comes at a crucial time when the airline is stabilizing operations and positioning itself for long-term expansion in an increasingly competitive global aviation environment.

Wilson stated that his tenure primarily focused on rebuilding Air India after its return to the Tata Group. He highlighted that the airline successfully completed the acquisition and integration of four carriers during this transformation period. He also emphasized that Air India shifted from traditional public sector processes to more efficient private sector practices. According to him, the company revamped leadership structures, improved workforce capabilities, and reshaped organizational culture. These changes helped create a stronger operational foundation. He noted that consistent efforts across departments allowed the airline to move forward with clarity, efficiency, and renewed strategic direction in a challenging aviation landscape.

The CEO further explained that Air India modernized its systems and introduced improved products and services. He said the airline significantly enhanced customer experience both on the ground and during flights. The company also expanded its fleet by adding nearly one hundred aircraft over recent years. Wilson also pointed to major infrastructure investments that support long-term growth and operational efficiency. Air India established South Asia’s largest aviation training academy to develop skilled talent internally. The airline also launched advanced simulator facilities to enhance pilot training capabilities and safety standards. It introduced a flying school and expanded its maintenance operations with a new engineering base. These initiatives aim to reduce dependency on external resources while improving operational control. Wilson said such investments will continue to benefit the airline in the future. He emphasized that these foundational developments position Air India strongly for sustained expansion and operational excellence.

Chairman Chandrasekaran acknowledged Wilson’s leadership during a period filled with internal restructuring and global challenges. He noted that the airline faced supply chain disruptions following the Covid pandemic, which delayed aircraft deliveries. He also mentioned broader geopolitical pressures that affected aviation operations worldwide. Despite these obstacles, Wilson and his team maintained focus and delivered steady progress. Chandrasekaran credited them for uniting diverse teams under a shared vision for rebuilding Air India. As the airline prepares for its next expansion phase, including large aircraft deliveries from 2027, the leadership transition will play a critical role in shaping its future trajectory.
