Actor Ranya Rao earned ₹12 lakh in each Dubai trip by allegedly smuggling gold: Report

Kannada actress Ranya Rao was arrested on Wednesday at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport for allegedly attempting to smuggle gold from Dubai. Authorities confiscated gold bars weighing nearly 15 kilograms and valued at Rs. 12.56 crore. As the investigation unfolds, new and startling revelations continue to surface.

Ranya Rao’s Frequent Trips and Alleged Smuggling Operation

Rao, the stepdaughter of senior Karnataka IPS officer Ramachandra Rao, reportedly traveled to Dubai 30 times over the past year. On each trip, she allegedly smuggled back kilos of gold. According to sources quoted in a report by India Today, smugglers paid her ₹1 lakh per kilogram of gold. Thus, she allegedly earned around ₹12-13 lakh per trip.

Smuggling Tactics: Modified Jackets and Waist Belts

Investigations have also revealed that the actress repeatedly used modified jackets and waist belts for her smuggling operations. She wore the same jackets and belts during her travels. When the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested her, they found the gold bars hidden in her modified jacket.

Under Surveillance: How Authorities Tracked Ranya Rao

Authorities had reportedly kept Ranya Rao under surveillance for some time due to her frequent trips to Dubai. On her return on Wednesday, DRI officials intercepted her just as she was about to clear airport security. After they stopped her, Rao stated that she was the daughter of IPS officer Ramachandra Rao, who serves as DGP (Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation). However, acting on prior intelligence, officials frisked her and recovered the gold.

Father’s Reaction: Shock and Denial of Involvement

Meanwhile, Ramachandra Rao expressed shock over his daughter’s arrest. “The media reports about this incident shocked and devastated me. I was completely unaware of these activities, and like any other father, I was deeply shocked. She does not live with us but stays separately with her husband, and there may be some family issues between them. Regardless, the law will take its course. My career remains untarnished, and I have nothing more to say,” ANI quoted him as saying.
