Opposition leaders submitted a no-confidence motion against Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday.
At least 118 MPs signed the notice and sent it to the Lok Sabha Secretary General. Soon after receiving the motion, Birla decided not to preside over House proceedings. Sources said he will stay away until authorities decide on the submitted resolution.
Opposition parties intensified criticism after Birla suspended eight MPs during protests. He had claimed receiving credible information about an unprecedented incident near the Prime Minister’s seat. Congress leaders rejected the allegation and denied any plan to harm the Prime Minister. They accused him of acting unfairly and targeting members raising legitimate concerns.

Decision comes after 118 MPs’ removal notice and mounting pressure
A source close to him said he chose this step on moral grounds. Article 94C allows any Lok Sabha member to submit a removal resolution. The Constitution requires members to give at least fourteen days’ written notice. Officials expect the House to consider the matter when it reconvenes on March nine.
Secretariat officials confirmed they will examine the notice according to established parliamentary rules.
Meanwhile, the House resumed business after days of disruption and political deadlock. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor initiated the discussion on the Union Budget. Members attempted to restore normal functioning during the afternoon session.
Earlier, Opposition leaders resolved to file the motion but avoided further escalation. A delegation led by K C Venugopal met him to seek a resolution. Treasury benches sent Minister Arjun Ram to represent the government side. The meeting ended without consensus, leaving the political standoff unresolved.
