YouTube Blocks CBC Report on Pro-Khalistan Figure’s Killing

YouTube has restricted access to a 45-minute CBC report delving into the killing of pro-Khalistan figure Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, British Columbia, last year. The report, featured on CBC’s The Fifth Estate, includes an extensive interview with Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the general counsel of the separatist group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ). This action came following an order from India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, leading to the blockage of the content within India while remaining accessible elsewhere globally.

India’s request for content blockage extended beyond YouTube, with Twitter (now X) also being urged to restrict access to the material. While X acknowledged the Indian legal obligation to block content within India, it maintained that freedom of expression should persist. CBC, in its report, highlighted its efforts to engage India’s High Commission in Ottawa for participation, which were met with silence. Despite the appearances of India’s High Commissioner to Ottawa on Canadian networks, CBC did not secure an interview with them.

Gill expressed dissatisfaction with the portrayal of the Khalistan movement and questioned CBC’s understanding of the subcontinent’s history.
