Xi warns US to tread carefully on arms supplies to Taiwan

China’s leader Xi Jinping described Taiwan as the most important issue in China US relations. He raised the issue during a phone call with US President Donald Trump on Wednesday. Xi urged Washington to act prudently when supplying weapons to Taiwan. He emphasized the need to safeguard China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Chinese media said Xi stressed the value of stable bilateral ties.

Trump called the conversation excellent, long, and productive. He said both leaders discussed major global and regional issues. The call covered trade, Taiwan, Ukraine, and the situation in Iran. Trump highlighted the importance of maintaining strong personal relations with Xi. He said cooperation benefits both countries and global stability.

Xi urges caution on Taiwan arms sales as Trump highlights strong ties and trade talks

Trump said China is considering increasing purchases of US soybeans. He noted imports could rise to twenty million tonnes from twelve million tonnes. Trade and economic cooperation featured prominently in the discussions. Trump later shared positive remarks about Xi on Truth Social. He said both sides recognize the need to keep relations strong.

Xi warned the United States to handle arms sales to Taiwan with caution. The US remains Taiwan’s largest arms supplier despite formal ties with Beijing. Washington approved an eleven billion dollar arms sale to Taiwan in December. China criticized the deal as escalating tensions across the Taiwan Strait. Beijing has not ruled out using force to achieve reunification.

Trump confirmed plans to visit China in April. He said he is greatly looking forward to the trip. The call followed renewed diplomatic engagement between China and Western leaders. Xi later held virtual talks with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin. Both leaders praised the strengthening relationship between Beijing and Moscow.
