Xi Jinping may visit New Delhi for the BRICS summit, signaling improving relations between India and China. Three sources said Xi could attend soon, marking his first India visit in seven years.
India will host the summit from September twelve through thirteen, drawing leaders and officials worldwide. Chinese officials are arranging hotels, security measures, logistics, and final preparations for Xi’s potential visit. One Indian source said Chinese officials actively coordinate arrangements before confirming Xi’s final travel plans. Two Indian sources said Xi could bring nearly four hundred officials during his India visit. That delegation would significantly exceed China’s fewer than two hundred officials accompanying Xi during 2019.

India-China Seek Cooperation Despite Border Tensions
Officials could use the summit to expand cooperation while managing longstanding strategic differences between countries. Those differences include border disputes, regional security concerns, trade issues, and geopolitical competition between neighbors. Xi’s attendance could strengthen efforts to stabilize relations following deadly Himalayan border clashes in 2020. Those clashes killed twenty Indian soldiers and four Chinese soldiers, ending decades of border peace.
The confrontation triggered a prolonged military standoff until both countries reached disengagement terms in 2024. However, recent patrol encounters near their disputed border have generated diplomatic concern between both governments. India recently stressed that maintaining border peace remains essential for improving bilateral relations with China. National Security Adviser Ajit Doval began visiting Beijing Monday for boundary discussions with Chinese officials. Doval will meet Foreign Minister Wang Yi during talks focused on resolving outstanding border issues. China’s foreign ministry said Beijing supports India’s efforts to successfully organize this year’s BRICS summit. However, Chinese officials said they lacked information confirming Xi’s attendance or potential summit itinerary yet. India’s foreign ministry declined to comment publicly on Xi’s possible visit or planned bilateral discussions. If Xi attends, his visit could demonstrate both countries want stronger ties despite strategic competition.
