Russian President Vladimir Putin might drop hints in the coming month about his potential participation in the 2024 presidential election, as reported by Kommersant newspaper. This could potentially extend his stay in power until at least 2030.
Putin has been in charge of Russia since the beginning of the 21st century, winning four presidential elections. Briefly holding the position of prime minister in a political landscape where opposition has become nearly non-existent. In the previous month, Putin stated that he would only address the question of his potential re-election in 2024 once the official announcement of the ballot is made later this year.
Putin stated at Vladivostok’s Eastern Economic Forum that parliament would decide his candidacy by year-end, following legal procedures. He emphasized that discussions about his candidacy will occur once the elections are officially announced and the date is set.

The parliament determines and schedules presidential elections in Russia, with a six-year frequency since extending the term limit from four years. While a second round of voting is a possibility if no candidate obtains over 50 percent of the vote, it has never occurred in practice, as Putin has consistently secured victory with substantial margins, as reported by AFP.
Human rights organizations assert that national elections in Russia have essentially become a formality, endorsing Putin and the ruling party. Many prominent Russian dissenters, including opposition figure Alexei Navalny, are either in exile or imprisoned on various charges. In August, Navalny received an additional prison term of 19 years on extremism allegations.
