Back-to-back powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela on Wednesday evening, collapsing buildings and terrifying residents nationwide. The U.S. Geological Survey measured the first earthquake at magnitude 7.1 near Morón. The epicenter lay along Venezuela’s Caribbean coast, west of the capital Caracas. Scientists located the quake approximately 168 kilometers west of Caracas city center. The first earthquake originated at a depth of 22 kilometers underground. One minute later, the USGS recorded a stronger earthquake measuring magnitude 7.5. The second quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers beneath Morón. Its epicenter was located 16 kilometers southwest of the coastal community.
Powerful earthquakes near Morón send shockwaves across Venezuela and shake the capital
Residents evacuated swaying buildings in Caracas and remained outside as damage emerged. Many watched in shock as collapsed walls exposed furniture and interiors to the street. Dust clouds rose above several neighborhoods while businesses suspended operations. Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello reported damage in multiple areas, including Altamira, and urged motorists to clear roads for emergency vehicles. Authorities warned residents to stay outdoors because aftershocks could further weaken structures.
The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami alert for the Virgin Islands, while authorities in the Dominican Republic also issued warnings. Officials later lifted an alert for Puerto Rico. Although Venezuela lies near several fault lines, strong earthquakes remain relatively uncommon. Unlike Mexico and Chile, Venezuela is not located along the highly active Pacific Ring of Fire, where most of the world’s earthquakes occur.
