US President Announces Bipartisan Deal on Federal Funding

US President Donald Trump said Republicans and Democrats in the Senate have agreed to move ahead with a partial government funding package. Lawmakers finalised five spending bills on Thursday, while temporarily removing funding for the Department of Homeland Security, according to CBS News.

Under the agreement, Congress will fund key departments, including defence, health, treasury and the federal court system, through September 30, 2026. Meanwhile, lawmakers will extend DHS funding at current levels for two weeks to allow further negotiations. Trump welcomed the deal and urged both parties to support it, calling for a bipartisan vote to keep most of the government running.

President Trump said the agreement ensures continued funding for most federal operations while allowing time to resolve differences over DHS. He also highlighted provisions supporting the Coast Guard, which he said the administration plans to expand and modernise.

Democrats pushed to remove DHS funding from the broader $1.2 trillion spending package following two fatal shootings involving federal agents in Minneapolis. Those incidents, along with an intensified immigration crackdown in Minnesota, triggered nationwide protests and renewed scrutiny of DHS agencies.

DHS oversees several federal bodies, including ICE, Customs and Border Protection, the Coast Guard and the Secret Service. Thousands of ICE and CBP agents have deployed to Minnesota as part of enforcement operations. The deaths of Renee Good on January 7 and Alex Pretti on January 24 intensified opposition to approving DHS funding without reforms.

Democrats are seeking changes that include warrant requirements for arrests, clearer identification rules for agents and broader structural reforms. Some lawmakers have also called for DHS Secretary Kristi Noem’s removal. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said enforcement actions had created fear and must stop.
