US military operations in the Middle East drew fresh attention after a Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker sent an emergency distress signal while flying near Qatar over the Persian Gulf.
A US Air Force KC-135 Stratotanker, often called a “flying gas station,” reportedly declared an in-flight emergency by sending the 7700 distress code. Flight tracking platform Flightradar24 showed that the aircraft took off from Al Dhafra Air Base in the United Arab Emirates before its signals disappeared over Qatar.
The aircraft had been supporting ongoing military operations in the region during rising tensions in the Middle East. According to tracking data, the plane moved in circular patterns for some time before starting its descent for landing. However, officials have not yet confirmed the exact reason behind the emergency.
So far, neither the US military nor Iranian authorities have released an official statement explaining the incident. Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency reported the disappearance using Flightradar24 information, but there is no proof linking the emergency to any hostile action.

US Flying Tanker Sends Emergency Signal Over Qatar
The KC-135 Stratotanker plays a major role in US Air Force operations because it refuels fighter jets, bombers, and other military aircraft while they remain in the air. This ability helps military planes travel longer distances and stay on missions for extended periods.
The aircraft uses four turbofan engines and operates mainly as an aerial refueling tanker. It also supports aircraft from the US Navy, Marine Corps, and allied nations. Because of this, the KC-135 remains one of the most important aircraft in long-range military operations.
In March, another KC-135 reportedly came under attack in western Iraq. The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a group linked to Iran-backed armed factions, claimed responsibility for that strike and said it targeted the aircraft in response to regional tensions.
More Than Just A Refuelling Aircraft
Besides mid-air refueling, the KC-135 also carries cargo, passengers, and medical evacuation teams. The aircraft includes a cargo deck above the refueling system, allowing flexible mission use during emergencies and combat operations.
Medical evacuation missions can include flight nurses and technicians who help transport injured or sick patients using special medical pallets. Depending on its setup, the aircraft can carry nearly 37,600 kilograms of cargo or several dozen passengers.
Built from Boeing’s 367-80 design, which also inspired the commercial Boeing 707, the KC-135 has served the US Air Force for more than six decades. Even today, hundreds of these aircraft remain active with the Air Force, Air National Guard, and Air Force Reserve.
