Iranian forces claim they captured a modern American unmanned submarine near the entrance of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s navy identified the captured underwater vehicle as Anduril’s Dive-LD unmanned underwater vehicle.
Sepah News, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ official outlet, reported the capture following an intelligence operation. Iranian officials described the vehicle as highly advanced and released footage showing the captured submarine. The IRGC separately claimed Iranian air defenses destroyed an American MQ-9 Reaper drone over Hormuz. The United States military acknowledged that one underwater drone malfunctioned during regional maritime surveys the previous day. However, Pentagon officials did not confirm whether Iranian forces captured the same malfunctioning underwater vehicle.

US Expands Unmanned Warfare Amid Iran Tensions
The Pentagon described the drone as an older model that carried neither sensitive nor classified equipment. American officials said the vehicle supported ongoing operations while surveying waters around the region. The United States increasingly invests in unmanned naval technology to monitor oceans and gather intelligence cheaply. These systems allow American forces to track hostile ships and submarines without exposing sailors to danger. Anduril says its Dive-LD can operate continuously for ten days without returning to its base.
The company also states that Dive-LD vehicles can reach depths approaching 6,000 meters underwater. DefenseScoop reported in 2024 that each Dive-LD unit costs approximately 2.5 million dollars. Meanwhile, US Central Command said American forces destroyed five Iranian crude oil tankers after attacks. CENTCOM said Iran’s Revolutionary Guard launched two ballistic missile attacks against an American warship recently. American strikes followed those attempted attacks and targeted Iranian vessels carrying crude oil, according to CENTCOM. The US Treasury also sanctioned twenty-seven Iranian airlines, expanding pressure against Tehran’s aviation sector. Treasury officials accused Iranian airlines of supporting weapons procurement, personnel transfers, and other destabilizing activities. Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian vowed continued resistance while emphasizing Tehran’s opposition to war and regional instability.
