US Warships, Fighter Jets Tracked Near Iran

Satellite imagery has confirmed the location of the US aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln near Iran, as Washington increases pressure on Tehran over its military programme and recent crackdown on protesters. US and Iranian officials are preparing to meet in Switzerland for a second round of talks. Iran says the discussions will focus on its nuclear programme and the possible lifting of US economic sanctions. Washington, however, has signalled that it may raise additional issues during the negotiations. The developments come amid rising regional tensions.

The USS Abraham Lincoln leads a strike group that includes three guided missile destroyers and carries around 90 aircraft, including F-35 fighter jets. The carrier, staffed by approximately 5,680 personnel, reportedly entered the Gulf region in late January. Recent satellite images place it about 700km off the coast of Oman in the Arabian Sea. The US has also reportedly deployed the USS Gerald R Ford, the world’s largest warship, to the Middle East. Officials expect it to arrive in the region within the next few weeks.

US Carrier Group Positioned Near Iran Ahead of Talks

Satellite tracking indicates a broader US military build-up across the Middle East. Analysts have identified at least 12 US naval vessels operating in the region, including destroyers positioned in the Gulf, the Red Sea and the eastern Mediterranean. The US has also expanded its air presence, deploying additional F-15 and EA-18 fighter jets to bases in Jordan. Surveillance aircraft, refuelling planes and cargo jets have moved from the US and Europe toward the region. These deployments reflect heightened military preparedness.

Iran has responded with its own display of military strength. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched naval drills in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical shipping routes. Iranian commanders inspected naval vessels and oversaw missile launches during the exercise. The Strait handles a significant share of global oil and gas shipments, making it strategically vital. The drills signal Tehran’s readiness amid escalating tensions.

Military experts say the current US deployment appears more extensive and sustainable than previous operations in Venezuela and last year’s strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities. Analysts note that the US now maintains a larger network of ships, aircraft and regional bases. This posture would allow Washington to conduct sustained air operations if necessary. Experts describe the deployment as a deterrent strategy that can scale up or down depending on developments. The build-up aims to counter potential threats while maintaining leverage during diplomatic negotiations.
