New Delhi: US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has begun his two-day visit to Ladakh, bringing fresh attention to the strategically important Himalayan region. Gor started his visit with sightseeing activities away from the cameras after arriving in the Union Territory. His trip marks the first visit by a senior US diplomat to Ladakh since the region became a separate Union Territory in 2019. The visit also comes after India and China experienced a prolonged military standoff following the deadly Galwan Valley clashes in June 2020. The timing of Gor’s visit has therefore attracted considerable interest as India continues to manage sensitive security and diplomatic issues along the Line of Actual Control.
US Supported India After Deadly Galwan Clashes
The United States strongly supported India following the Galwan clashes, which resulted in the deaths of 20 Indian Army personnel. Washington openly criticised China’s attempts to change the existing situation along the Line of Actual Control and strengthened its strategic engagement with New Delhi. The US also provided India with real-time intelligence support and specialised high-altitude equipment for troops deployed in difficult Himalayan conditions. The two countries have continued to expand their defence and strategic partnership in recent years, making Gor’s presence in Ladakh particularly significant given the region’s proximity to the India-China border and its importance to India’s national security.
Gor’s visit also follows his recent remarks on Jammu and Kashmir, which generated a strong diplomatic response from Pakistan. The US ambassador described Kashmir as “an important part of India”, directly reflecting India’s long-standing position on the region. Pakistan strongly objected to the statement and summoned the US Charge d’Affaires in Islamabad to lodge what it called a strong demarche. Islamabad described Gor’s comments as factually incorrect. Gor serves not only as the US Ambassador to India but also as US President Donald Trump’s Special Envoy to South and Central Asia, giving his statements and diplomatic engagements added significance across the region.

Gor Holds Meeting With Omar Abdullah in Srinagar
Before Gor travelled to Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah made India’s position on internal matters clear. Abdullah said India would decide issues concerning Jammu and Kashmir and indicated that he would not discuss matters related to the region’s internal affairs with the US envoy. Despite those differences, Gor and Abdullah held a meeting in Srinagar and described their interaction positively. Gor said the two sides had a warm meeting and expressed their intention to strengthen their relationship. The meeting highlighted the US interest in maintaining diplomatic engagement with regional leaders while India continues to emphasise its position that matters concerning Jammu and Kashmir fall within its domestic jurisdiction.
Gor later arrived in Leh, where security personnel escorted him in a large security convoy. Authorities have not disclosed details about his schedule or confirmed whether he plans to meet political leaders, local representatives or other delegations during his Ladakh tour. Earlier reports had indicated that Gor might meet Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, who is currently staying in Leh. However, subsequent reports claimed that the proposed meeting had been cancelled. Neither the US mission nor other authorities officially confirmed the reported meeting or its cancellation. Gor’s Ladakh visit is expected to remain closely watched because of the region’s strategic importance, the continuing sensitivity of India-China relations and the broader expansion of India’s partnership with the United States.
