UN Pauses Hormuz Evacuation Mission Following Vessel Attack

The United Nations’ International Maritime Organization paused its Strait of Hormuz evacuation initiative after a vessel sustained an attack.

A cargo ship reported a suspected strike while transiting the Strait of Hormuz near Oman on Thursday. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations received the distress report and immediately issued a maritime security advisory. The vessel reported a projectile struck its starboard side near Oman’s Port of Dahit during transit.

British maritime officials confirmed the incident occurred approximately fourteen kilometers southeast of the strategic Omani port. Another maritime security source indicated a drone likely conducted the attack against the commercial cargo vessel. Investigators have not identified the responsible party because authorities continue examining available operational evidence carefully.

The attack increased regional security concerns and complicated international efforts supporting safe commercial maritime navigation. Maritime authorities strengthened monitoring operations while assessing risks affecting ships crossing the strategically significant waterway.

The IMO launched its evacuation initiative on Tuesday to assist stranded vessels leaving the Gulf safely. The organization planned evacuations for six hundred ships carrying approximately eleven thousand mariners across dangerous regional waters. Officials designed two evacuation corridors through Iranian waters and Omani waters under coordinated international supervision.

The humanitarian initiative responded directly to disruptions caused by the prolonged United States-Israel conflict involving Iran recently. IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez announced a temporary suspension after reviewing developments surrounding the reported vessel attack carefully. He explained authorities would reassess safety guarantees before allowing additional evacuation movements through the contested maritime corridor.

The IMO previously secured navigation assurances before initiating operations across the Strait of Hormuz evacuation framework. The latest incident prompted officials to verify existing security arrangements protecting commercial shipping throughout the operational region. International maritime agencies continue coordinating closely while monitoring evolving threats affecting regional navigation safety.
