Threads Software Limited, a small UK software company, has issued a letter to Meta, demanding that it cease using the name “Threads” due to the company’s trademark ownership. Threads Software Limited has granted Meta a 30-day deadline to discontinue the use of the name. The company has warned that if Meta fails to comply, it will pursue a court injunction. In the letter dated October 30, the UK company asserts its ownership of the trademark, which it obtained in 2012, and highlights its formation in 2018 to commercialize the Threads service.
The British company secured the trademark for “Threads” for its intelligent message hub, designed with artificial intelligence (AI) in mind, to store a company’s emails, tweets, and phone call information in a cloud database.
“Our Threads Intelligent Message Hub currently has an enormous technological lead on any similar service available. The exponential growth in AI has met all our predictions and more,” the company said in a statement posted on its website.
“Threads was designed with AI in mind and one of the reasons we call it an intelligent message hub. For us to change the service name simply to avoid confusion with Meta’s product could well set back the service enough for us to lose that technological lead,” the statement further said.
Dr. John Yardley, the UK company’s managing director, explained that they waited four months to contact Meta for legal counsel.
Mr. Yardley said taking on the tech giant “is not an easy decision”.
“We recognize that this is a classic ‘David-and-Goliath’ battle with Meta,” Mr. Yardley said in a letter sent to Meta. “They might assume name freedom, but it doesn’t grant them the right to use the Threads brand name.”
Meta launched Threads in June this year, and it attracted 100 million users within five days. However, a month later, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said more than half of Threads users stopped using the platform.
