Following Trump’s threat to “finish off” Iran, six countries united to counter the Hormuz blockade.

A day after Donald Trump warned he could “finish off” Iran in an effort to push reluctant allies into action, six countries indicated they may consider a coordinated response to Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz—a step that could help stabilise global oil and gas prices. The Strait is a crucial energy route, handling nearly 20% of the world’s oil shipments.

The United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, and Japan stated they are open to organising a joint mission to restore safe passage through the key maritime route. However, they have not specified the timeline or structure of such an effort. Germany and the Netherlands emphasised that their participation would depend on a ceasefire or at least a pause in hostilities.

In their statements, the countries strongly criticised Iran’s actions. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned attacks on unarmed commercial ships, civilian infrastructure, and energy facilities, as well as what he described as Iran’s effective closure of the Strait.

The joint declaration underlined the urgency of securing maritime routes and highlighted the need for coordinated use of strategic petroleum reserves, along with increased oil production to maintain global supply. The six nations also called for an immediate end to attacks on energy infrastructure by all sides.

This development followed Trump’s remarks suggesting that eliminating what he called the Iranian regime could force hesitant allies to act. His comments came amid growing concern among European countries and Japan—both heavily reliant on Gulf energy supplies—over rising oil prices and potential disruptions.

Earlier, Trump had also noted that many of the United States’ NATO allies were unwilling to participate in ongoing military operations involving the US and Israel against Iran.
