From the first day of his second term, Donald Trump made clear that he would not allow convention to restrain him. By invoking “manifest destiny” and declaring ambitions over strategic territories such as the Panama Canal and Greenland, he directly challenged principles that have governed international relations since World War Two. No modern US president has so openly threatened the sovereignty of long-standing allies or dismissed multilateral institutions, alliances, and international law. Supporters applaud his “America First” assertiveness, while critics argue that he is pushing the world toward a system driven by raw power rather than shared rules.

Through transactional diplomacy that blends threats, flattery, tariffs, and abrupt reversals, Trump has forced allies into a constant state of recalculation. European governments now split between confronting Washington and accommodating it, Canada has begun cautiously reducing its reliance on the US, and leaders openly question Nato’s long-term future. Although Trump has secured headline-grabbing moments — including temporary ceasefires and increased defence spending — his unpredictability has led many leaders to describe the moment as a rupture, not a transition. By insisting that only his own judgment can restrain him, Trump has left the world navigating an era of unprecedented uncertainty.
