On Tuesday, Labour Minister Hsu Ming-chun issued an apology for her comments on the proposed recruitment of Indian migrant workers, which have faced criticism for being deemed “racist,” as reported by the Central News Agency Taiwan.

In an interview, Minister Hsu mentioned that the ministry’s initial focus would be on hiring workers from northeastern India, citing the similarity in skin color and dietary habits. She added that individuals in this region, mainly Christians, are recognized for their skills in manufacturing, construction, and farming, according to assessments by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), as reported by the Central News Agency.
Hsu Expressed Regret for her ‘Inaccurate’ Comments
During a legislative hearing on Tuesday morning, Hsu expressed regret for her ‘inaccurate’ comments, clarifying that Taiwan’s labor policies are designed to promote equality without discrimination, whether for local or foreign workers.

As per the Central News Agency, she underscored her intention to highlight the skills and performance of Indian workers, disassociating from any discriminatory motives.
Legislator Chen Kuan-ting of the Democratic Progressive Party strongly criticized Hsu’s remarks in a video posted on X, vehemently opposing the use of skin color and race as criteria for recruiting migrant workers.
