A Russian oil tanker carrying crude will reach Cuba by March 31, defying a de facto U.S. fuel blockade on the island. Shipping data shows the vessel, Anatoly Kolodkin, nearing Cuba’s eastern coast and heading toward the port of Matanzas. Its arrival will mark the first oil shipment to Cuba since January.
The tanker, loaded with around 730,000 barrels of crude, has adjusted its schedule slightly but continues its journey without interruption. Tracking data indicates it has been moving steadily and is expected to dock soon. Authorities have not attempted to stop the vessel as it approaches Cuban waters.
The shipment will temporarily relieve Cuba, a nation of 9.6 million people facing a worsening energy and economic crisis. The country has faced severe fuel shortages in recent months, affecting daily life and industrial activity.

Russian Oil Tanker Brings Relief to Crisis-Hit Cuba
Cuba’s situation worsened after it lost a key oil supplier earlier this year following the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro. Since then, fuel scarcity has intensified, forcing the government to implement strict rationing measures and emergency policies.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has warned of potential consequences for countries supplying oil to Cuba. Despite these threats, U.S. authorities appear to have allowed the tanker to proceed, reducing the likelihood of any direct intervention at this stage.
The ongoing fuel crisis has led to rising prices, reduced public transport, and frequent nationwide power outages. Aging infrastructure has struggled to meet electricity demand, triggering blackouts and sparking rare public protests across the island.
Experts say the crude oil could be refined into diesel, which Cuba urgently needs. However, officials must decide how to use the limited supply—either to stabilize electricity generation or support transportation and essential services for the short term.
