Washington: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio dismissed reports that India planned a trade agreement with Iran. Rubio spoke after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during the SCO Summit.
The leaders met on the sidelines of the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Reports suggested that New Delhi and Tehran could move toward a broader trade agreement soon. However, Rubio rejected those reports and said he saw no evidence of such an agreement. He acknowledged that countries maintain independent foreign policies and continue diplomatic contacts with Tehran regularly. Rubio also noted that Washington had communicated with representatives of the Iranian government during discussions.

Rubio Issues Fresh Warning Over Iran Sanctions
However, he warned countries against helping Tehran bypass American sanctions or establish revenue-generating channels. Rubio repeated President Donald Trump’s warning that nations assisting Iran could face American penalties themselves. He said countries should not create mechanisms allowing Iran to generate money despite existing sanctions. According to Rubio, Tehran could use such revenue to support terrorism and develop nuclear weapons. Rubio stressed that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons remains a central Trump administration objective.
He said Iran would never receive permission to possess a nuclear weapon under Trump’s administration. Rubio added that Washington would primarily use sustained economic pressure to influence Tehran’s policy decisions. However, he said the United States could use military force whenever absolutely necessary for security. He explained that military action could protect America and prevent Iran from threatening other countries. Rubio accused Tehran of spending financial resources on armed groups instead of improving Iranian lives. He claimed Iranian leaders primarily seek money to support terrorism and pursue nuclear weapons directly. Meanwhile, Washington and Tehran continued exchanging threats after renewed fighting intensified across the Middle East. Washington has pledged to increase economic pressure on Iran while threatening its allies with sanctions.
