A $10,000 (about Rs 8 lakh) pair of Nike Air Jordan 3 sneakers that Spike Lee commissioned are up for auction after being found earlier this year in an unlikely location—a donation bin at a shelter.
The gold shoes, which are estimated to bring in about $20,000 (about Rs 16.66 lakh), will be put up for auction by the Portland Rescue Mission’s non-profit Burnside Shelter, according to Sotheby’s auction house.
The collection, which included a box signed by American designer Tinker Hatfield and a size 12.5 Nike Air Jordan 3 Retro “Spike Lee Oscars,” was created especially for the director of motion pictures to wear at the 91st Academy Awards in 2019.
According to the description, the uncommon discovery was discovered in April while a volunteer at a transitional housing program was sorting through the clothing and shoes that came in through a donation chute.
According to a statement from Sotheby’s, “a pair of gold Nike Air Jordans was discovered near the bottom of the bin as they sorted through the items.”
“Recognising their unique appearance, the participant set the sneakers aside for staff to examine, as they were in pristine condition.”
Hatfield went to the shelter to verify the authenticity of the Air Jordan 3 sneakers to make sure they were real.
Happy the shoes ended up
“I’m happy the shoes ended up here,” he said to employees of Portland Rescue Mission. “It’s a happy ending to a really great project.”
Sotheby’s provided the following explanation of the shoes’ creation: “With an ongoing love affair of all things Nike and Jordan Brand – and often receiving special models – Spike Lee originally made an appearance as ‘Mars Blackmon’ in the now-iconic “Spike and Mike” Jordan ads, which started with the Air Jordan 3.”
“This began a relationship between Lee and Jordan, resulting in a unique model, dubbed the Jordan Spiz’ike, in 2006.”
The 2019 sneakers’ exact origins are still unknown, but bidders have until December 18 to claim the uncommon memorabilia that wasn’t initially made available to the general public.
