Putin Lauds PM Modi: India Is Fortunate He Lives and Breathes the Nation

Russian President Vladimir Putin praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a reliable leader deeply devoted to India and bilateral relations. In an exclusive interview with India Today, Putin said, “India got lucky. He lives and breathes India.” He described Modi as a person of integrity whose leadership actively strengthens economic, defence, humanitarian, and technological cooperation between the two nations. Putin recalled Modi’s previous visit to Moscow, highlighting a personal and engaging interaction. “He travelled here, and we sat together at my residence. We drank tea the whole evening and discussed a range of topics purely as humans,” he said. The Russian President emphasized that such informal discussions complement formal diplomacy and build trust, fostering long-term cooperation.

India fortunate to have a leader who lives and breathes for the nation

Arriving in New Delhi for a two-day visit at Modi’s invitation, Putin received a warm welcome at the airport, where the leaders shared a hug before traveling together to the Prime Minister’s official residence. He was later hosted for a private dinner. The visit aims to further strengthen the eight-decade-old India-Russia partnership, focusing on defence, trade, technology, and high-tech collaboration.

Putin underscored Modi’s personal commitment to bilateral ties, noting his active role in advancing strategic initiatives. He said Modi ensures consistent dialogue and productive engagement on key areas like defence projects, energy cooperation, and joint technology ventures. According to Putin, India-Russia relations have remained resilient even amid global geopolitical upheavals, sanctions on Russia, and international pressure.

The Russian President also referenced Modi’s meeting with him in Tianjin earlier this year during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit. During that meeting, Modi provided transportation for Putin, a symbolic gesture highlighting mutual respect and personal rapport. Putin noted that such gestures reflect India’s diplomatic independence while emphasizing the human side of statecraft. He praised Modi for combining visionary leadership with approachability, which strengthens both formal partnerships and personal trust.

Putin’s visit reinforces India’s strategic autonomy and Russia’s engagement in Asia beyond its close ties with China. Analysts suggest that the personal chemistry between the two leaders, combined with formal agreements, ensures long-term stability in defence, trade, and technology collaborations. The visit also signals to the world that India-Russia relations continue to thrive despite global tensions, showcasing a partnership built on trust, commitment, and mutual respect.
