NASA Chooses Prada to Create Space Suits for Artemis III Mission

Astronauts anticipate that the new space suits will provide them with enhanced capabilities for their space exploration endeavors. Luxury fashion house Prada will be designing next-generation space suits for American space agency NASA. According to the BBC,the Italian-brand is teaming up with private company Axiom-Space to create the new range of space-suits. NASA intends to utilize the suits in Artemis III, targeting a moon landing in 2025, marking a significant mission milestone. In a release, Axiom said Prada said they would bring expertise with materials and manufacturing to the project.

According to Professor Jeffrey Hoffman, a veteran of five NASA missions and four spacewalks, Prada’s extensive expertise in various composite fabrics suggests they could potentially make valuable technical contributions to the outer layers of the new space suit, as he mentioned in an interview with the BBC.

In space, maintaining a suitable thermal environment is crucial, so he emphasized that these space suits wouldn’t prioritize extravagance.

“A spacesuit is really like a miniature spacecraft. It has to provide pressure, oxygen, keep you at a reasonable temperature,” said Professor Hoffman.

Astronauts expect the new space suits to offer them advanced capabilities for space exploration.

Michael Suffredini, the company’s chief, stated in a quote to The Independent that Prada’s technical expertise in raw materials, manufacturing techniques, and innovative design concepts would introduce advanced technologies crucial for ensuring the comfort of astronauts on the lunar surface, as well as addressing the much-needed human factors considerations absent from legacy spacesuits.

Astronauts anticipate improved mobility and flexibility in these suits, enabling broader lunar exploration compared to previous missions.

Earlier this year, NASA unveiled the prototype design for the Artemis III space suits.

SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, will transport the astronauts to the moon for a human landing on Earth’s satellite, and they will return to Earth after spending a few weeks on the lunar surface.
