PM Modi–Meloni’s New Viral “Melody Toffees” Moment Takes Over Social Media

Prime Minister Narendra Modi created a viral moment during his visit to Rome by gifting Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni a packet of Melody toffees ahead of their bilateral talks. The light-hearted exchange quickly grabbed attention online, as many social media users linked the gesture to the popular “Melodi” trend that combines the surnames of the two leaders. In a video shared online, Modi, dressed in a blue bandhgala suit, smiled while handing the iconic Indian candy to Meloni, who warmly accepted the gift and thanked him. The clip immediately spread across platforms such as X and Instagram, where users flooded timelines with memes, screenshots and edited videos celebrating the moment.

Modi Melody Gift to Meloni Sparks Viral

The “Melodi” trend has remained popular on social media for nearly three years. The phrase first gained widespread attention during the COP28 Summit in Dubai in 2023 when Meloni posted a selfie with Modi and captioned it, “Good friends at COP28 #Melodi.” The post quickly went viral and inspired countless memes and jokes online. Since then, almost every public interaction between the two leaders has sparked discussions on the internet, with users often portraying their diplomatic meetings in a humorous and friendly light. Their appearances at global events, including G7 summits and bilateral meetings, consistently revived the trend and strengthened its online popularity.

This latest interaction stood out because Modi directly referenced the viral meme through the gift itself. Instead of an ordinary diplomatic exchange, the Prime Minister chose Melody toffees, one of India’s most recognisable confectionery brands, making the gesture impossible for internet users to ignore. Manufactured by Parle Products, Melody candies hold a nostalgic place in Indian pop culture and remain famous for the advertising slogan, “Melody itni chocolaty kyun hai?” The slogan continues to appear widely in memes and social media references, adding another layer of humour and symbolism to the exchange between the two leaders.

PM’s Rome Visit Blends Diplomacy

Modi’s visit to Rome marked the final stop of his five-nation diplomatic tour and carried significant strategic importance beyond the viral moment. During the visit, Modi met Meloni over dinner and accompanied her to the iconic Colosseum. He also interacted with members of the Indian diaspora in Rome and praised their role in strengthening ties between India and Italy. Officials from both countries are expected to expand cooperation in areas such as trade, defence, maritime security, connectivity and other strategic sectors through bilateral discussions. Despite the serious diplomatic agenda, it was the small packet of Melody toffees that dominated online conversations and transformed a long-running internet joke into one of the most memorable highlights of the visit.
