Pete Hegseth Calls on Army Chief Randy George to Step Down, Retire

Pete Hegseth has asked US Army Chief of Staff Randy George to step down and retire immediately, though officials have not disclosed a clear reason for the move. The decision comes amid a broader reshuffle of senior military leadership as the United States continues its conflict with Iran. The Pentagon confirmed that Hegseth directed the Army’s top uniformed officer to step aside, signaling a significant shift within the military hierarchy.

Randy George’s Exit Adds to Growing Turmoil in US Military Leadership

Reports also suggest wider changes could follow within the administration. According to sources cited by The Atlantic, discussions have taken place regarding potential exits of key figures, including FBI Director Kash Patel, Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll, and Labour Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer. However, the timing of these moves remains uncertain, and Donald Trump has not yet made a final decision. Hegseth has acted swiftly to reshape the defence establishment, removing several top generals and admirals to align leadership with the administration’s national security priorities.

George’s removal marks the latest in a series of high-level changes at the Pentagon. Since taking office, Hegseth has overseen the dismissal or early retirement of more than a dozen senior military leaders. Earlier rounds of changes included the removal of top officials such as Admiral Lisa Franchetti and General Jim Slife, along with the dismissal of Joint Chiefs Chairman General Charles Q. Brown Jr. by Trump. These actions have contributed to ongoing instability within the military’s top ranks.

An experienced infantry officer, George graduated from West Point and served in major conflicts including the Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan. He assumed the role of Army Chief of Staff in 2023, a position typically held for four years. Before that, he served as Vice Chief of Staff of the Army and worked closely with former Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin as a senior military adviser and aide. His departure now adds to a growing list of leadership changes across the US defence establishment.
