Pakistan’s Naval Air Base Comes Under Attack; Balochistan Liberation Army Takes Responsibility

The Balochistan Post reports that gunfire and multiple explosions recorded from PNS Siddique, Pakistan’s second-largest naval air station, located in Turbat. The attack on the Naval Airbase in Turbat has attributed to the Majeed Brigade of the ban Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA). The Majeed Brigade claims that China and Pakistan are abusing the resources in the area and is against China making investments in the province of Balochistan.

The attackers “came from three sides of the airport boundary, but security forces responded immediately and foiled their attempt to infiltrate the premises,” a senior official told the newspaper. He did not, however, offer any more information, such as whether there were any soldiers hurt or killed.

BLA targets Chinese-Pakistani interests; China invests in Balochistan

In the past, the BLA has attacked Chinese and Pakistani interests in the area as well as other places. Despite a decades-long separatist conflict, China has made significant investments in the mineral-rich southwest province of Balochistan, which borders Iran and Afghanistan. These investments include the development of the port of Gwadar.

Naval Base Attack Jeopardises China-Pakistan Economic Corridor

The naval base is important to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, which is a component of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s Belt and Road Initiative and includes energy and road projects. Two troops and all eight of the BLA terrorists were kill in last week’s gun and explosives attack on a facility outside of Gwadar, according to Pakistani security services.
