Pakistan Under Fire Over Alleged Attack on Afghan University

Pakistan carried out attacks in eastern Afghanistan’s Kunar province, leaving at least seven people dead and around 75 injured. Among the victims were students and a professor from Kunar University. Local sources reported that many of the injured were civilians caught in the violence. The Taliban administration confirmed that a significant number of those hurt were university students. The incident has intensified concerns about civilian safety in the conflict-affected region.

The Taliban government stated that the strikes involved mortars and rockets targeting areas around the university. Some eyewitnesses and local sources also claimed that jets and drones were used during the assault. The attack caused panic across the campus and nearby residential zones. People rushed to escape as explosions echoed throughout the area. The scale of the assault raised serious questions about the nature of the operation.

A professor at Kunar University described hearing multiple loud explosions while teaching, creating fear among students and staff. In Asadabad, journalist Matiullah Shahab reported hearing heavy bombardment from about a kilometre away. He witnessed civilians fleeing the town centre in chaos during the attack. Several injured individuals were taken to hospitals for treatment. The atmosphere in the area remained tense following the incident.

Pakistan Accused in Kunar Attack

Afghanistan’s higher education ministry reported extensive damage to university buildings and surrounding infrastructure. The destruction disrupted academic activities and affected hundreds of students. Authorities expressed concern over the targeting of an educational institution. The damage highlighted the broader impact of the conflict on civilian infrastructure. Officials began assessing the losses and planning recovery efforts.

Pakistan rejected the allegations and denied targeting the university or residential areas. Officials from its information ministry described the claims as false and misleading. However, tensions between the two countries have continued to rise amid repeated cross-border incidents. Earlier, an air strike in Kabul reportedly caused significant casualties, further escalating the situation. Both sides have exchanged accusations over recent military actions.

The Taliban leadership strongly condemned the Kunar strikes, calling them serious violations and acts of aggression. A previously fragile ceasefire had held after talks mediated in early April, but this incident has strained diplomatic efforts. Relations between Pakistan and the Taliban have worsened over allegations of militant safe havens. Pakistan has maintained that its operations target militant groups operating from Afghan territory. The latest developments have further complicated regional stability and peace negotiations.
