India and Canada Focus on Trade, Energy and Security

Modi and Carney emphasised the need to turn recent diplomatic progress into tangible outcomes across several areas of mutual interest. Both leaders highlighted opportunities to expand cooperation in technology, energy, defence, security and people-to-people exchanges. They also welcomed growing engagement in areas such as finance, artificial intelligence and defence cooperation. Their discussion came amid global economic uncertainty linked to changing US trade and tariff policies. Both countries aim to strengthen their partnership while addressing emerging geopolitical and economic challenges.

Canada’s International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu and Foreign Minister Anita Anand visited New Delhi to advance negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). Both governments reiterated their commitment to concluding the trade deal at the earliest opportunity. The agreement aims to strengthen economic cooperation and support their shared target of doubling bilateral trade by 2030. India and Canada recently completed the fifth round of CEPA negotiations in Ottawa. The two countries hope to finalise the agreement by the end of 2026.
