External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated on Tuesday that China has breached multiple agreements by amassing a significant military presence along the India-China border, rendering the security situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) “abnormal.” Addressing an event organized by the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in Kolkata, Jaishankar emphasized the unusual and heightened military deployment from both sides following China’s actions, underscoring the serious security challenge this poses for India. He highlighted the shift in India-China relations, which were previously based on maintaining peace at the border while addressing boundary differences, a balance disrupted by China’s 2020 incursions and the subsequent Galwan Valley clash.

Border Security Concerns and Economic Challenges
Jaishankar noted that since 2020, both nations have stationed forces beyond their usual bases and patrol areas, marking a significant deviation from the past. He urged Indian citizens not to overlook the country’s security concerns, stressing the ongoing tensions and the importance of national vigilance. “It is not just a matter of a conflict 62 years ago; it is about what is happening today,” he said, emphasizing the need for awareness and readiness in facing the current border situation.
The minister also highlighted economic challenges, attributing them to previous neglect of the manufacturing and infrastructure sectors. He questioned the heavy reliance on Chinese imports and stressed the importance of economic security, advocating for shorter, more reliable supply chains and a focus on retaining core businesses within the country. Addressing industrialists and businessmen, Jaishankar pointed out the global debate on economic security and the necessity of safeguarding sensitive sectors to fulfill national security obligations.
