Amid tense US-Europe relations, French President Emmanuel Macron visit to the White House was a diplomatic test. By using a mix of praise, persuasion, and careful corrections, he managed to keep Europe’s voice at the table without making significant concessions.
Macron reaffirmed Europe’s commitment to Ukraine while subtly countering Trump’s claim that Europe was not doing enough. He acknowledged the need for European nations to take greater responsibility for their own security but emphasized that American support remains crucial.
Macron Supports Trump-Putin Dialogue
One of Macron’s most notable statements was his endorsement of Trump’s decision to re-engage with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This marks a departure from the previous stance of European leaders, who have largely focused on isolating Putin through sanctions. “There is good reason for President Trump to re-engage with President Putin,” Macron said, recognizing a shift in US policy.
He also proposed a greater European role in ensuring Ukraine’s security post-truce, suggesting that France and the UK could contribute air power and troops stationed away from the frontlines. However, he underscored the importance of American backing, which he ultimately did not secure from his meeting with Trump.

While Macron succeeded in ensuring Europe remained part of the conversation, he left Washington without any firm US commitments. He also received no criticism of Putin from Trump, indicating that major policy shifts are unlikely in the immediate future.
Despite this, his visit signaled that European leaders are willing to engage diplomatically with the US administration, even if the path forward remains uncertain.
